Tai says: Regarding "if with respect to phenomena and real things an intrinsic nature is posited": as stated in the *Nyāyapraveśa*, sound is the subject, while sound's impermanence, emptiness, non-self, and so forth are the predicates; the "real thing" is the fact of the subject. Just as the paratantra nature of matter that serves as the object of eye-consciousness abides as an ineffable phenomenon beyond speech, after the eye-consciousness arises, the conceptual mental consciousness produces concepts such as "matter", "blue", "yellow", "red", or "white". In accordance with the speech that arises, it expresses concepts of blue, yellow, red, white, long, short, square, round, and so on. Various aspects appear corresponding to the speech, like an echo responding to a sound. Because of speech, the various real things and phenomena upon that paratantra nature are held to have intrinsic nature. Hence the text says that names are conceptualized by mental consciousness: that phenomena and real things, in accordance with speech, immediately have intrinsic natures with respect to those phenomena and real things—this cites their thesis. In the subsequent refutation, it first clarifies the flaw of multiple names; second, it says the flaw is that multiple names apply to only one. The passage from "that is to say" onward directly exposes the contradiction in their attachment, summarizing the error: "if complete" concludes the previous establishment of numerous metaphorical designations expressing [the entity]; "if incomplete" concludes the second, where only one is determined among the multiple. The text following this should be rechecked against the Sanskrit to be certain; one must not rely on the old version of the *Bhūmi* text to fabricate a different master.
