Ji says: Since you state that in accordance with the name, that which is referred to is designated, then prior to the establishment of the metaphorical name, that expressed thing would have to lack an intrinsic nature, because things exist only in accordance with names; thus, before the name has arisen, that thing is absent. Since that thing is absent prior to the arising of the name, for the expressive name to express it at present is unreasonable. Since the metaphorical name does not exist, for the expressed phenomena and things to possess an intrinsic nature in accordance with the expressive name is unreasonable. This refutes them step by step.
