The third part explains the intention behind producing the teaching. Agreeing with the aforementioned statement that all phenomena are transcendent of verbal expression: why do the Buddhas produce verbal expression with regard to phenomena that are transcendent of words? If the expression corresponds to the phenomenon, the phenomenon is not transcendent of words; if the expression contradicts the phenomenon, then the teaching provides no benefit. The answer has four points: first, one cannot teach for others; second, without teaching, others do not hear; third, without hearing, others do not know; fourth, it is in order to cause others to know through what can be heard. Thus, the intention of the Buddhas' verbal expression is that although phenomena are devoid of words, wishing to cause others to know the wordless phenomena, they speak using the marks of expedient provisional designations. If they did not produce the teaching, others would not hear and know the single phenomenon that is transcendent of words. For the benefit of others, Buddhas and bodhisattvas speak through provisional names and conceptualizations within that which is nameless; this is relying on words to reveal the wordless.
