Below, the author of the treatise explains the meaning of the sūtra without explaining this verse; rather, he explains the prose cited immediately before concerning eradicating the conceptualization of earth and so forth. The meaning of this is: with respect to the referents apprehended by all conceptualizations of earth and so forth, from this conceptualization of earth one applies the names of earth and so forth to establish designations, which are called 'conceptualizations of earth and so forth'. Names arise from conceptualizations; names also supplement conceptualizations, and are termed 'investigating names and conceptualizations'. With respect to those referents explained as form and so forth, there must be superimposition and deprecation. If one gives rise to the clinging to an existing nature regarding those referents, it is called the mark of superimposition; if one gives rise to the clinging that deprecates the ultimate truth of the mere referents, it is called the mark of deprecation. With respect to these conceptualizations, one eradicates, severs, and abandons them.
