Master Jing explains: If investigation and accurate cognition are spoken of generally, this contemplation is practised both before and on the [bodhisattva] grounds. Before the grounds is understandable; what about on the grounds? When a preceding ground has been fulfilled, one transcends and enters a subsequent ground, as is also stated in the text above. In the notes on abandoning confusion, there is a note that during the path of preparation (prayogamārga), one can perform this contemplation. In the text of the Mahāyānasaṃgraha, it is explicitly said to be cultivated only at the stages of the ten dedications and the four roots of good: investigation is at the roots of good of heat and summit, while the four accurate cognitions are at forbearance and supreme dharma. Investigation and accurate cognition take wisdom (jñāna) as their essence. 'Vitarka' is seeking, and 'cetanā' is deliberating; when one seeks and deliberates on name, referent, reality, and falsity without yet reaching a determinate understanding, this is called performing investigation; if it is determinate cognition, it is called accurate cognition. 'Investigation' and 'accurate cognition' are both names based on meaning, while 'four' is a number name; thus they are named by joining the number to the meaning, called the four investigations and the four accurate cognitions. If their names are explained separately: 'investigation of names' means that name is the object, and investigation has the sense of searching out; it is named from the object and the meaning. The investigation of things is also named in this way. Intrinsic nature is the essence; their being mutually adventitious is called nominal designation. 'Nominal designation' and 'investigation' are both names based on meaning, named from essence and meaning.
