Regarding 'investigation of the nominal designation of intrinsic nature' and 'investigation of the nominal designation of differentiation': one contemplates that name, referent, and so forth each have differentiations such as suffering, impermanence, taintedness, and taintlessness; 'differentiation' is the meaning, and both nominal designation and investigation are named from meaning. How the four accurate cognitions get their names may be understood by analogy. Dharma Master Tai states: The original phonetic transcription is vitarka, translated here as investigation; vicāra is translated here as reflection; bodhi is translated as awakening; vipaśyanā is translated as insight. Master Ji says: That the cognitions of investigation and accurate cognition extend to both cognitions is as stated in the Abhidharmasamuccaya and the Mahāyānasaṃgraha.
