Intending to explain the text, the meaning of supernormal knowledge is first distinguished through four doors: 1. Discerning the essence, provisionally in terms of the ten knowledges. Regarding the essence of the supernormal knowledges: as for the supernormal knowledges of divine eye and ear, if attained by ordinary beings, followers of the two vehicles, or bodhisattvas before or upon the stages, they are exclusively worldly knowledge. If attained by the Buddhas, they are of the nature of seven knowledges, namely: knowledge of dharma, subsequent knowledge, knowledge of suffering, of origination, of the path, of exhaustion, and of non-arising. Because when these two supernormal knowledges take form and sound of the desire realm as object, it is knowledge of dharma; taking upper forms and sounds as object, it is subsequent knowledge; taking tainted forms and sounds as object, it is knowledge of suffering and origination; taking taintless forms and sounds as object, it is knowledge of the path. Being attained within a body where afflictions are exhausted, it is named knowledge of exhaustion; because karma, afflictions, and residual traces are definitively unarisen within the body attained, it is also named knowledge of non-arising. It only excludes worldly knowledge, knowledge of others' minds, and knowledge of cessation. The supernormal knowledge of psychokinetic power, the supernormal knowledge of past abodes, and the supernormal knowledge of others' minds, when attained by ordinary beings, the two vehicles, and bodhisattvas before the stages, are invariably worldly knowledge. The supernormal knowledge of psychokinetic power attained by bodhisattvas on the ten stages is of the nature of five knowledges, namely: worldly knowledge, knowledge of dharma, subsequent knowledge, knowledge of suffering, and knowledge of origination. The supernormal knowledge of knowing the distinctions of minds attained on the ten stages comprises seven knowledges: the preceding five plus knowledge of others' minds and knowledge of the path. The supernormal knowledge of past abodes attained by bodhisattvas on the ten stages comprises six knowledges: knowing past events of the lower two realms is the two knowledges of dharma and subsequent [knowledge]; because it knows the tainted, the latter are the two knowledges of suffering and origination. Furthermore, worldly knowledge also knows the past; taking the path previously practiced in the past as object, the latter is knowledge of the path.
