Therefore, below in explaining the supernormal knowledge of past abodes, it states: "Furthermore, by virtue of the knowledge recollecting past abodes, one recollects past births, and for the sake of sentient beings reveals the foremost and rare bodhisattva practices of difficult and ascetic conduct of various kinds in former lives, causing them to generate pure faith in the Buddha." Moreover, the *Lotus Sūtra* states: "What you are practicing is the bodhisattva path." From this we know that the supernormal knowledge of past abodes also takes the truth of the path as object, and therefore has the knowledge of the path; knowing past realization of cessation, it also has the knowledge of cessation; it excludes only worldly knowledge, knowledge of others' minds, knowledge of exhaustion, and [knowledge of] non-arising. If attained by the Buddhas, it possesses the nature of eight knowledges, excluding only worldly knowledge and knowledge of others' minds. The supernormal knowledge of the exhaustion of taints: when attained by the two vehicles, if it takes the exhaustion of taints as its object, it is named the supernormal knowledge of the exhaustion of taints, comprising the nature of six knowledges, namely: knowledge of dharma, subsequent knowledge, worldly knowledge, knowledge of cessation, knowledge of exhaustion, and knowledge of non-arising, excluding the knowledges of the [other] three truths and knowledge of others' minds; if it is named the supernormal knowledge of the exhaustion of taints by being attained within a body in which taints are exhausted, it comprises the nature of ten knowledges. When bodhisattvas on the ten stages attain the supernormal knowledge of the exhaustion of taints according to their degree, it also comprises the nature of six knowledges. The supernormal knowledge of the exhaustion of taints attained by the Buddhas comprises five knowledges if it takes the exhaustion of taints as object, and comprises nine knowledges if attained in a body of exhausted taints, excluding worldly knowledge.
