In the first part: (1) the inherently natural taintless seeds, having long been perfumed and developed, are capable of generating the first bhūmi, hence called the "essential nature"; (2) the persons of essential nature that are matured and the persons of gotra, who should be matured through the wholesome dharmas of the three vehicles, humans, and gods, are called "those who are matured"; (3) among those who are matured, later there are six differences with respect to the faculties and so forth; (4) the person who is able to mature has twenty-seven kinds of expedients for self-benefit and benefiting others; (5) with respect to the bodhisattvas of the six stations, they are called "those who are able to mature"; (6) among those who are matured, those who have practiced extensively and are capable of immediately entering sagehood are called "those already matured". Ce states: The first one, in relation to the fourth (expedients), is that which is matured; in relation to the two fruits of personally accomplishing the Buddha-dharma and benefiting others, it is that which is able to mature, as stated at the end of the chapter. Furthermore, in relation to the fifth (those who are able to mature), the second is called "those who are matured"; the third (differences) consists of the six kinds of differences upon the first (essential nature); the fourth (expedients) is able to mature the causes and conditions of the first (essential nature). In brief, the second is the person for whose sake it is done; the sixth is the mark of the person for whose sake it is done having already been matured; the remaining four are the persons who are able to mature. The first is the essential nature; the third is the differences. Due to this essential nature and these differences, expedients are necessary, hence the expedients of maturation are clarified; and to reveal the stations and grounds, the persons who are able to mature are clarified.
