Regarding those who ultimately lack the dharma of nirvāṇa: because they lack the cause, they do not have the nature of parinirvāṇa; this refers to persons who merely seek saṃsāra and do not delight in nirvāṇa. Passages such as these all agree with this treatise in speaking of the gotra-less; why slander only the newly translated texts? However, the Laṅkāvatāra states: There are two kinds of icchantika: first, those who sever wholesome [roots]; second, bodhisattvas. When the icchantika who severs wholesome [roots] meets a good friend, he attains buddhahood; the bodhisattva-icchantika ultimately does not take supreme bodhi. Western masters explain: Wishing to reveal that the bodhisattva ultimately does not enter the fruit of great nirvāṇa, out of hoping for the previous mark, it temporarily adduces the icchantika who severs goodness as a suggestive omission, without speaking of lacking nirvāṇa.
