Second, as for clarifying its provenance, according to the Commentary and other sources, it is said: After the Buddha entered nirvāṇa, māratic occurrences arose in profusion, sectarian attachments rivaled one another, and many clung to views of existence. Bodhisattva Nāgārjuna, having realized the Pramuditā-bhūmi, collected the Mahāyāna teaching of signlessness and emptiness and composed the Mūlamadhyamakakārikā and others, thoroughly articulating the genuine essential meaning and removing those views of existence. Great treatise masters such as Āryadeva composed the Śatakaśāstra and others, broadly propagating the great meaning. Because of this, sentient beings once again clung to views of emptiness.
