After nine hundred years, there was a renunciant named Asaṅga, rendered in Tang Chinese as Wuzhuo. He resided in the country of Ayodhyā in Central India (the place of his original birth being Gandhāra in North India). Five hundred li west of that country's royal capital, he established a meditation hall, led several hundred disciples, and instructed them in the methods of meditation. Asaṅga as a person had ascended to the first bhūmi, realized the concentration of dharma-illumination, obtained great supernormal faculties, served the Great Benevolent Honored One [Maitreya], and requested him to teach this śāstra and others.
