Regarding the statement that, as explained before, there are five kinds of suffering as the antidotes to the five pleasures: as explained before in the Chapter on Benefiting Oneself and Others, 1. Causal pleasure, now inverted as causal suffering, namely evil karma inverting wholesome karma, and contact of sense-bases and objects that accords with painful feeling inverting the causal suffering of according with pleasant feeling; 2. Feeling pleasure, now inverted as feeling suffering, namely painful feeling; 3. Pleasure of antidoting suffering, which means obtaining food when hungry and so forth, now inverted as the suffering of not obtaining; 4. Pleasure of cessation of feeling, which means entering the absorption of cessation, now inverted as suffering because one is in a state with mind; 5. Pleasure of renunciation, which is the pleasure of leaving home; hence below it says 'home', which is the suffering of being at home. 'Seclusion' means obtaining the first dhyāna of the form realm and leaving the fetters of the desire realm; now, not obtaining the first dhyāna of the form realm, there is the suffering of the fetters of the desire realm. 'Tranquility' means the second dhyāna leaving the pleasure of investigation of the first dhyāna; now, not leaving the first dhyāna, there is the suffering of investigation. The pleasure of bodhi means the three forms of bodhi; now, being in the stage of an ordinary person, there is suffering. Hence, home, desire-realm dharmas, investigation, and [being an] ordinary person are suffering. Assigning them in this order, among the latter five sufferings, the first three are the suffering of suffering, the next one is the suffering of change, and the last one is the suffering of conditioning.
