The second section clarifies properly contemplating the truths. Regarding 'mostly aspiring to the excellence of gnosis': dwelling on the fifth stage, one mostly aspires to the gnosis that contemplates the truths. Regarding 'regarding the four noble truths... its characteristics should be known': according to the sūtra text, there are fourteen truths: four are the root and ten are the branches; the branches explain the root four and are not separate dharmas. The ten truths are: 1. conventional truth; 2. ultimate truth; 3. truth of characteristics; 4. truth of distinction; 5. truth of exposition; 6. truth of affairs; 7. truth of arising; 8. truth of exhaustion and non-arising; 9. truth of entering the path; 10. truth of the bodhisattva stages giving rise to the Buddha's gnosis. The first two truths are the two truths of ultimate and conventional; the next four are called the truth of suffering; the next one is called the truth of origination; the next one is called the truth of cessation; the latter two are called the truth of the path. The former nine gnoses transform followers of the Lesser Vehicle; the latter one gnosis transforms followers of the Great Vehicle, as that sūtra explains in detail. Here there is only a brief summary. Regarding 'based on awakening others... up to "are spoken of in this way"': regarding 'based on awakening others' and so forth, the first three, Master Xuanzang gave two interpretations. The clause 'based on awakening others' means teaching the two vehicles with the four noble truths; since the two vehicles are not the Buddha vehicle, they are spoken of as 'others.'
