Below, the author of the treatise explains the eight phrases of the sūtra. "Contemplation of self-characteristics" contemplates that the self-characteristics of the three sensations are suffering. "Contemplation of the cause of operation in the present life" contemplates present contact simultaneously producing sensation as the cause of operation. "Contemplation of its cessation" contemplates the cessation of sensation. "Contemplation of the cause of operation in a future life" contemplates wholesome and unwholesome karma as the origination of future sensation, hence called the cause of operation in a future life. "Contemplation of its cessation" contemplates the truth of the path being able to eradicate that sensation, hence called contemplation of its cessation. "Contemplation of the cause of operation of both" contemplates that the relish for sensation merely generates and increases contact (the cause of present sensation) and karma (the cause of future sensation), hence called contemplation of the cause of operation of both. "Contemplation of the cause of the cessation of operation of both" contemplates that when [seeing] the disadvantages of sensation, one can eliminate those two causes of operation, present and future. And "contemplation of purity" contemplates the release, liberation, and unconditioned state from sensation, calling it purity.
