"The first two dhyānas have eighteen": this excludes the male, female, grief, and suffering [faculties]. Previously it was said that the phenomena bound [to a realm] are exclusively tainted, but here it is said that the phenomena belonging to a stage comprise both tainted and taintless; thus the upper and lower [passages] differ, yet there is no error. The third and fourth [dhyānas] respectively exclude joy and pleasure. Jing says: The unarrived of the first dhyāna establishes joy like its root, and the second dhyāna is also like this; the unarrived of the third dhyāna establishes pleasure, and the unarrived of the fourth dhyāna establishes equanimity.
