Second, explaining that those who correctly resolve according to the principle-gate of true reality are able to enter the five kinds of transcending origination. Tai, Ji, and others say: The afflictions of the path of seeing are like undigested food retained in the body. In the Western Countries, undigested food is called 'raw food' (saṃbhavāhāra / unripe food); when raw food remains in the body, it can cause fatal ailments, and when the afflictions of the path of seeing remain, they can cause grave ailments. If one severs the delusions of seeing, it is like leaving behind raw food; thus, by transcending origination—that is, as Master Xuanzang said, soaring beyond to transcend origination—one thereby enters the path of seeing. There are five kinds of persons who transcend origination: first, the one [attaining] the first fruit; second, the once-returner who leaps beyond; third, the non-returner who leaps beyond; fourth, the pratyekabuddha; and fifth, the bodhisattva.
