Regarding "Three are distinct characteristics," and so forth: the Cheng Weishi Lun says: ignorance, craving, and grasping are called distinct characteristics because they are not commingled with the other factors; the rest are mixed characteristics. That is, when the meaning of the preceding and succeeding is fixed and does not transform into other factors, it is called a distinct characteristic; what is contrary to this is a mixed characteristic. What leads agreeable and disagreeable fruits is the substantial entity of the factor of formations, because before being moistened it is called the leading cause. And what produces the distinctions of destinies is the factor of existence, because formations, upon being moistened, are transformed into the name of existence, being the factor that can produce.
