Herein, because the path that severs the higher-grade afflictions is difficult at its initial arising, two mental applications serve as preparations. Severing the subsequent lower-grade afflictions when the stage is fulfilled is also difficult and not an initial cultivation, so one mental application serves as preparation. Since uninterrupted progress from a preceding grade can have the sense of preparation for the subsequent grade, preparations are not mentioned for severing the middle three grades. Since uninterrupted progress in a subsequent grade can have the sense of a path of liberation for the preceding grade, it is not mentioned that severing the first six also possesses paths of liberation. Because severing the final three grades fulfills the stage and enters the fundamental stage, the seventh mental application is stated to be the path of liberation.
