The next two verses reveal the nature of liberation. Tai says: "When that very manas was previously together with the afflictions, it did not have the defiled nature of the four afflictions, so it is said that the manas concurrent with the four afflictions is liberated from the four afflictions; it is not that after that manas co-arose with the afflictions, when the afflictions are later severed, an additional distinct pure mind arises that is different from the previous defiled mind." Bei says: "There is a distinct sixth mental consciousness that arises to counteract the mind of manas and its afflictions; the sixth mental consciousness itself exists, and though the presence of afflictions and absence of afflictions are different, its nature is pure, and thus it is called liberation." Ji says: "The absence of previous defilement is termed liberation; it is not that the mind subsequently becoming pure receives the name of liberation. In the intention of the two vehicles, there is only the absence of defilement; because what is purified is nonexistent, the mind that purifies is also nonexistent; it is not necessary for the mind to be purified to be called liberation."
