Tai says: The author of the Mahāyānasaṃgraha distinguishes seeds as having distinct entities; his text is identical to this, unlike the ten material and eight mental factors that arise in separate continuities of multiple entities and are produced co-existently. The functions of the ten material and eight mental factors reside in the root consciousness without separate entities, and therefore fall into a single continuity. How so? If the ten material dharmas and eight mental dharmas had distinct marks in entity and evolved co-existently when manifesting together, one would visibly see their respective various ten material and eight mental entities evolving in diverse ways across many kinds of continuities; this is the meaning of a continuity of multiple entities. Now, according to the principle of conforming evolution, untainted seeds do not have distinct marks separate from the six sense spheres; precisely on the six sense spheres of such a single kind and phase, there is an excellent function producing untainted states, termed the excellence of the six sense spheres. Obtainable from beginningless time, arising in continuity as one with the six sense spheres, it is called a single continuity.
