Below, it then explains the ten progressive stages. The ten progressive stages are: 1. taking wisdom arisen from hearing as the cause; 2. giving rise to three kinds of faith regarding the path and the fruit of the path—first, faith in the true reality, next, faith in true discipline, and finally, faith in one's own capability, as in the Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi; 3. staying aloof from clamour and all unwholesome reflections; 4. the wisdom arisen from reflection that directs toward definitive goodness; 5. being able to enter the two skillful means of cultivation; 6. realizing the wisdom arisen from cultivation; 7. giving rise to delight and aversion regarding saṃsāra and nirvāṇa; 8. entering the direct realization of truth, which is liberation for those in training; and 9. repeatedly cultivating the path, which is liberation for those beyond training. The first five precede mindfulness and the contemplation of impurity; the next one is at the stage of the contemplation of impurity and mindfulness; the next one is in the four wholesome roots giving rise to delight and aversion regarding saṃsāra and nirvāṇa, which is contemplation of the four truths; and the last two can be known. With respect to these nine kinds, having nirvāṇa without remainder as their foremost, one thereby realizes [nirvāṇa] without remainder, which is the tenth; or, alternatively, the above nine kinds
