The hindrance of defilement refers to the defilements of seeing and cultivation across the nine stages. The hindrance to liberation refers to the unachieved nature regarding the eight liberations. Fascicle thirteen of the Abhidharma[samuccaya] says: There are twenty-seven distinctions of pudgalas, namely: liberated by faith, attained by vision, bodily witness, liberated by wisdom, doubly liberated; candidate for stream-entry, fruit of stream-entry, candidate for once-returner, fruit of once-returner, candidate for non-returner, fruit of non-returner, candidate for arhatship, fruit of arhatship; at most seven returns, kulaṃkula, ekavīcika, parinirvāṇa in the intermediate state, parinirvāṇa upon rebirth, parinirvāṇa without exertion, parinirvāṇa with exertion, parinirvāṇa flowing upward; arhat liable to fall back, arhat liable to think of suicide, arhat who protects the Dhamma, arhat who abides unshaken, arhat capable of advancing, and unshakable arhat.
