7.11

Regarding "referred to as internal distinctions within this body, subsumed under what is hard and solid," etc.: what is subsumed under hardness is earth; the internal physical sense faculties and dust subsumed under this earth are appropriated by the ālayavijñāna. Now, this great earth element closely adheres to those appropriated sense faculties and dust, and this internal earth element is also appropriated by the ālayavijñāna; therefore it says "closely adheres and is appropriated." The water and so forth below are to be understood in the same way. In the external earth element, it says "neither closely adhering nor appropriated": if it is the internal earth element, it closely adheres to the basis, being proximate to the fundamental consciousness and capable of being appropriated.
