In explaining the stage of nothingness: although the stage of nothingness truly possesses the four aggregates and form mastery through dhyāna, one conceptually generates the resolute conviction that there are absolutely no other objects; hence there is conceptual resolute conviction and conceptual attention, [seeing that] apart from consciousness there is not the slightest existing object; thus it is called 'nothing whatsoever'. (Master Tai says:) Because one forms the conviction of no object, the mark of presence and absence manifests corresponding to the mind; being subsumed under the paratantra, the Buddhabhūmisūtraśāstra says: 'The real principle of nonexistence is subsumed under the pariniṣpanna; the nonexistence manifested by the mind is subsumed under the paratantra nature.'
