"Syllabary" (mātṛkā) refers to thirty-three consonants and fourteen vowels. The fourteen vowels are: a, ā, i, ī, u, ū, ṛ, ṝ, ḷ, ḹ, e, ai, o, au, aṃ, aḥ; excluding the last two, they make fourteen. The five of ka, kha, etc.; the five of ca, cha, etc.; the five of ṭa, ṭha, etc.; the five of ta, tha, etc.; the five of pa, pha, etc.; ya, ra, la, va, śa, ṣa, sa, ha, kṣa; excluding kṣa, they make thirty-three. Applying the former fourteen vowels to the latter thirty-three consonants generates all things. Because these can generate all letters and can encompass all meanings, they are called "mothers" (mātṛkā), being the roots that produce letters and containing all meanings.
