This is the second, upholding the arousing of the mind, as explained before. What is the essence of this vow? It takes desire, faith, and resolute determination as its essence, or it takes subsequently attained wisdom as its essence. Therefore, among the ten perfections, the first six are fundamental wisdom and the latter four are subsequently attained wisdom; vows rank eighth, so they take subsequently attained wisdom as their essence. If examined strictly in terms of their intrinsic nature, they take desire and faith as their essence. However, this is explained in two passages of the Mahāyānasaṃgraha itself. According to the text immediately below, it takes resolve and aspiration as its essence, aspiration being the mental factor of desire.
