The above correctly explains the benefits of possessing the wisdom of emptiness. If the first two are combined, the text is explained as three sections; in terms of meaning, there are four sections. Here, it is first broadly treated as three sections, but in terms of combined meaning it is divided into four sections; hence it speaks of the third, the fourth, and so on. From "it should be known that herein" onward, the purified meaning is known by contrast. Below this there are four [points]: First, because they lack the wisdom of emptiness, they do not truly know saṃsāra, and thus with defiled minds they transmigrate in saṃsāra; this conversely explains the first [point] of the combined explanation, "not dreading nirvāṇa." Second, if through the contemplation of impermanence they loathe saṃsāra, they swiftly enter nirvāṇa; this conversely explains the second [point] of the combined explanation, "also not having great longing for nirvāṇa." Third, if because of lacking wisdom they dread nirvāṇa in their deep mind, then they cannot fulfill the provisions capable of realizing nirvāṇa and constantly dwell in saṃsāra; this conversely explains the third [point] above, "staying far away from pure resolute faith in all dharmas," and so forth. Fourth, if because of lacking compassion they dwell extensively in the joy of detachment in that nirvāṇa, they will immediately and swiftly enter parinirvāṇa; this conversely explains the fourth [point], "being unable to mature the Buddha-dharmas and sentient beings." Now concluding the converse explanation, the treatise states: "these bodhisattvas lack great expedient means for unsurpassed, complete, and perfect awakening." Next, the third type of explanation of the four meanings can be understood by reasoning based on the text. Or, first, the four meanings are directly clarified—this initially establishes the thesis; from "it should be known that herein" onward, the converse explanation reiterates and explains the preceding meaning. Within the reiterative explanation there are two [parts]: first, the converse explanation of the four meanings; second, the direct explanation of the four meanings.
