The above constitutes the completion of the first round of explanation; next below is the second round of explanation. [From the passage beginning,] "Furthermore, because bodhisattvas cultivate such a resolute faith in emptiness, they do not feel deep terror toward nirvāṇa, nor do they feel great longing for nirvāṇa," up to "these bodhisattvas lack great expedient means for realizing unsurpassed, complete, and perfect awakening," first is the correct explanation; second is clarifying and purifying the preceding meaning and the explanation. Within the first, the correct explanation, there are three [parts]: the first two are explained together, while the third and fourth are explained individually and separately. As for the first two being explained together, the treatise states: "Furthermore, because bodhisattvas cultivate such a resolute faith in emptiness, they do not feel deep terror toward nirvāṇa, nor do they feel great longing for nirvāṇa." This means, first, that because they possess the wisdom of emptiness, when dwelling in saṃsāra they do not dread nirvāṇa; second, although they fully comprehend saṃsāra and are capable of entering nirvāṇa, they also do not feel great longing for nirvāṇa because they possess wisdom. Thus, the first and second are explained together. How is this known? It is known by analogy with the explanatory text that follows. Third, [regarding the passage,] "If bodhisattvas deeply dread nirvāṇa [...] up to [...] stay far away from all pure resolute faith": because they possess afflictions and the like, they do not skillfully dwell in saṃsāra, they dread nirvāṇa, and they do not give rise to aspiration for it, so that consequently they are unable to generate pure resolute faith in the realm of nirvāṇa. Because they lack wisdom, they cannot cut off saṃsāra, and thus they dwell extensively in saṃsāra. Fourth, [regarding the passage,] "If bodhisattvas dwell with abundant longing for that nirvāṇa [...] up to [...] they cannot bring the Buddha-dharmas and sentient beings to maturation": because they lack compassion, they long for that nirvāṇa in their deep mind and swiftly enter it; hence they cannot bring the Buddha-dharmas and sentient beings to maturation. If they possess compassion, they do not delight in entering nirvāṇa; teaching and transforming sentient beings within saṃsāra, they do not cling to nirvāṇa.
