The treatise says: 'As gotra is explained, the initial generating of the aspiration and the undertaken preparation should be known to be likewise.' Explanation: Just as gotra has the previous meanings of aid, cause, and so forth, one should know that generating the aspiration and the rest are also likewise. Question: What is the 'undertaken preparation'? Previously, explaining the support of generating the aspiration, it was called 'practicing preparation'; now here it is again called 'undertaken preparation'. Explanation: What is undertaken and what can undertake are two different names. The practice that is undertaken refers to the factors conducive to awakening; the practice that can undertake refers to that generating of the aspiration. Therefore, the former generating of the aspiration is called practicing preparation; now here, following the text, the factors conducive to awakening are the undertaken preparation—the two are distinct.
