Where the treatise explains the knowledge of all aspects, the six types are as in the text. Why does it not mention the remaining knowledges? Because this establishes the doctrine by means of six gateways; if one included the other knowledges, the number would increase, hence they are not stated. Furthermore, regarding the gateway of cause and effect: in the causal stage, four knowledges subsume knowledge comprehensively, and in the fruitional stage, two knowledges subsume knowledge comprehensively. Furthermore, because the causal position is formulated according to the truths, there are only the knowledges of the four aspects; because the fruitional position is discussed generally, the explanation of knowledge is exhausted based on subsumption by the two knowledges. / The seven types of knowledge were not clearly adopted previously. / 'Knowledge of marks' is just the knowledge of exhaustion; 'knowledge that precedes the ten powers' is just the knowledge of non-arising. If so, why were the previous knowledges of the four truths not adopted here? Someone says: Knowledge of marks refers to the knowledge that takes the thirty-two marks as object; knowledge that precedes the ten powers is just the preparatory knowledge when wishing to give rise to the ten powers. Now it is explained: if discussed according to reality, the two knowledges of Dharma and subsequent [knowledge] are just the knowledges of the four truths; now, discussing each of the ten knowledges according to their distinct characteristics, they are not the previous knowledges of the four truths. The remaining knowledges can be understood. / 'Knowledge of marks' means the knowledge that takes the marks of phenomena as object, or the knowledge that takes the intrinsic essence and marks of all phenomena as object is called knowledge of marks. / 'Knowledge that precedes the ten powers' is just the preparatory knowledge prior to the arising of the ten powers.
