When the treatise states, "Fourth: properly relying upon a spiritual friend, whether conforming to or diverging from the teaching according with the Dharma, adapting freely to them", and so forth, it means: when the teacher upon whom one relies expounds the Dharma, if it agrees with the past, it is called "conforming"; if it is different, it is called "diverging". Or, relying upon the sūtras, treatises, etc., is "conforming"; if he presents an alternative interpretation alongside his own view that does not rely on the sūtras, etc., it is called "diverging"—a distorted view of conforming to the Dharma, yet one adapts freely to the teacher without wavering. Furthermore, intrinsic nature is called "conforming", and particular differences are called "diverging". Moreover, "conforming" means making these meanings accord, like application in hetuvidyā; "diverging" means making these meanings distinct, like counter-application in hetuvidyā.
