定四相第一相中云「能斷煩惱、語言尋伺、喜、樂、色想」，即初禪斷欲煩惱，第二離尋伺語言，三、四及四無色，如其次第，離喜、樂等。

In the explanation of the four characteristics of concentration, the first characteristic states, 'it can sever the afflictions, speech, vitarka and vicāra, joy, bliss, and perceptions of form.' That is, the first dhyāna severs the afflictions of desire; the second is free from vitarka, vicāra, and speech; the third, fourth, and four formless [attainments], in their proper order, are free from joy, bliss, and so forth.
