The treatise says: "[The verse beginning] 'Intrinsic nature, all, difficult,' and so forth." This clarifies the nine kinds of giving. / "Giving of intrinsic nature" first comprehensively clarifies the essential nature of giving. / "Giving of all" distinctively clarifies the practices of giving, the characteristics of the practice of giving; because the practices of giving are not single, it is called "all". In relation to this practice of giving, the remaining seven gates are opened, and they correspond below. / Regarding "giving that is difficult to practice", being able to renounce what is difficult to renounce is called "difficult to practice"; the practice of giving being supreme is called "giving that is difficult to practice". / Regarding "all-gate giving", all practices of giving are subsumed within this gate; because the subsumed practice is broad, it is called "all-gate giving". Furthermore, cultivating giving within all gates is called "all-gate giving". / Regarding "giving of a virtuous person", the practice of giving is purely good, and what is done is purely good, so it is called "giving of a virtuous person". / Regarding "giving of all kinds", the practice of giving is complete, and within all conditions this practice of giving is accomplished, so it is called "all kinds". Therefore, it is distinct from the term "all" in the preceding two. / Regarding "giving according with what is sought", it matches the feelings of those who come, giving whatever they delight in, so it is called "giving according with what is sought". / Regarding "giving of happiness in this world and the other world", it benefits both this and the other worlds so that they attain happiness, hence it is called this giving. / Regarding "pure giving", the practice of giving is without fault, and what is done is without offense, so it is called "pure giving".
