Regarding the treatise's statement, "Furthermore, by means of these twelve bodhisattva stages as explained, passing through the temporal duration of three incalculable great eons, one is able to eternally sever all unwholesome states belonging to the category of the affliction obstacle, and sever all unwholesome states belonging to the category of the obstacle to knowables, and so on, up to, according to their sequence, cultivating the provisions of severance": Here, regarding the two obstacles of affliction and knowables, on the first bhūmi one severs the conceptualized active manifestations and their seeds, along with the afflictions of the path of cultivation. Because upon attaining the path of seeing, the upper and middle grades of afflictions are suppressed and do not operate, with only the lower grade remaining; upon reaching the eighth bhūmi, one further suppresses these lower-grade active manifestations so that they never arise again. Therefore, the treatise says that they are definitively severed on the eighth bhūmi; this is not severing the seeds, for the seeds of those three grades are severed at the vajra-like mind. As for the obstacle to knowables in the seventh consciousness, during the ten bhūmis, upon entering and emerging from contemplation, it may or may not arise; only at the vajra-like mind are its seeds severed together; in the remaining bhūmis one can neither suppress its active manifestation nor sever its seeds. In the sixth consciousness, the obstacle to knowables is severed along with its seeds according to the bhūmi: for example, on the first bhūmi it also arises, and on the second bhūmi its active manifestation is obstructed; upon reaching the eighth bhūmi, not only are the seeds of the obstacles of this bhūmi severed, but the active manifestations of the ninth and tenth bhūmis are also suppressed so that they never arise again, though their seeds are not severed. "Minds with outflows intervening on the eighth bhūmi and above" means that wholesome minds with outflows arise intermittently, not that such obstacles arise. This is the meaning of this passage; the rest will be explained separately.
