Regarding the treatise's statement, "If correctly cultivating the supreme, highest grade of vigorous diligence, some may be able to transcend many intermediate eons, or some may even transcend many great eons": This is discussed solely with regard to bodhisattvas of the first eon, because there is surpassing before the bhūmis. How is this known? In the explanation of the three eons just prior to this, the first eon was discussed in terms of constant vigorous diligence, not lacking vigor; thus we know that in the first eon there is non-vigor, and therefore it is possible to speak of surpassing. Furthermore, the preceding explanation of the second eon stated that this is determined, because these bodhisattvas have attained purified resolve and are definitely vigorously diligent. Hence we know that from the second eon onward there is none who lacks vigor, and surpassing cannot be spoken of; at all times they are constantly diligent. Therefore, when they arouse afflictions, it is solely for the benefit of sentient beings.
