The treatise states: "Excepting only the births received by bodhisattvas on ordinary stages, here the bodhisattvas who possess wisdom are taken for the five births." There are two explanations: One says that this takes the second abiding, because from the ten abidings onwards bodhisattvas have not yet entered the [first] asaṃkhyeya, so they are not yet called "possessing wisdom"; the second explanation says that only from the first bhūmi onwards are they called "possessing wisdom." In terms of doctrinal meaning, the first explanation is superior, because bodhisattvas of the ten abidings attain enlightenment through the eight aspects. Furthermore, sovereign birth is only spoken of as the first bhūmi; hence we know that it excludes other births and is common to other abidings. For "possessing wisdom," taking the former explanation is superior.
