"The Second Holding, Section on the Yoga of Following the Dharma, Chapter One: Bodhisattva Characteristics": of the four holdings of the Bodhisattvabhūmi, this is the second. The first holding directly clarifies the practices that are trained in, though not without also discerning the persons capable of training; this holding clarifies that after the persons capable of training have trained in what is to be trained in, they accomplish the bodhisattva characteristics, and the practice that accords with the dharmas trained in is named the section on the yoga of following the dharma. The Bodhisattvabhūmi initially lists ten chapters; the first is the holding, which has eighteen chapters divided into three holdings, namely lineage, resolve, the factors of bodhi, and so forth, as explained before, specifically receiving the name of holding. This second holding contains four chapters, namely characteristics, divisions, superior intention, and abodes. "Characteristics" means that having matured in this Dharma, one enters into the characteristics of a bodhisattva, and hence it is called "characteristics." Divisions and the rest are as in the subsequent chapters. This chapter is expounded first, preceding the second holding, and therefore it is called "Chapter One: Characteristics."
