The treatise says: "Proper reflection, improper reflection"—this is clear. "Or without reflection"—this is the mindless absorption. "Or possessing vitarka and vicāra"—this is the absorption with mind. "In absorption, not in absorption"—this is clear. The meaning here is that during these six states, the cognitive objects are not of one kind and the experiences are not single; since minds do not arise simultaneously, the mental consciousness takes any one of these objects as its cognitive object. Or if a sound arrives, they claim [consciousnesses] do not arise simultaneously; if there is no eighth, what experience would arise? If there is an eighth, the eighth experiences it. Even though one enters absorption and so on and lacks the remaining five consciousnesses, the experience of awareness still arises. If there is no eighth, this should not arise. This is the meaning here.
