The treatise says: "Furthermore, the seeds of wholesome dharmas that conform to the aids to liberation (mokṣabhāgīya) and conform to the aids to penetration (nirvedhabhāgīya) included in the ālayavijñāna..." Here, the Dharma master says: generating hearing-prajñā and so forth at the initial resolve is the aids to liberation; among the seven expedients, the three including the meditation on the five cessations of mind are called conforming to the aids to penetration, because they are the preparatory applications (prayoga) of the aids to penetration; the four expedients of heat and so forth are called the aids to penetration. Now the explanation is: the three preparatory applications of the five cessations of mind and so forth are precisely the substance of the aids to liberation, and are all prior to the aids to penetration; hence they are called conforming to the aids to penetration. The aids to liberation are also like this. From hearing-prajñā onward, they are called the aids to liberation; prior to that, upholding the twelve divisions of scriptures and so forth are innately acquired wholesomeness, and thus are the preparatory applications for those aids to liberation, their substance not being the aids to liberation. The aids to liberation pertain to binding across the nine stages, as will be found in the text below. Regarding the aids to penetration, the Dharma master says: they pertain to seven stages—the four of the form realm and three of the formless realm. If so, how can it say below in the six direct realizations that they arise dependent on three or dependent on five? Therefore, know that the aids to penetration are bound to five stages of the desire and form realms, because the former three expedients are the aids to penetration. If the meditation on the five cessations of mind and so forth are in a distracted state of mind, they are bound to the desire realm and so forth; hence they pertain to seven stages. Because the four wholesome roots of heat and so forth reside only in the form realm, "dependent on three" and "dependent on five" also do not conflict.
