Where the treatise says, 'It should be known that the great elements first occupy a spatial location, and subsequently the remaining derived forms operate dependent on this location': this is stated in terms of the gateway of the supported and the support. When retribution is induced through karma-born arising, the great elements arise as the support, so that derived forms exist simultaneously, because derived forms are the supported; therefore it says that the remaining derived forms operate dependent on this location, not at a different time. Just as in the first fascicle, when rebirth is first taken, the great elements of the eye faculty and so forth first occupy a location, and derived forms arise dependent on them. Also, as in the second fascicle, it is only after the seeds of the great elements have produced the great elements that the seeds of derived forms can then produce form. This agrees with that text. Regarding sound, there are extensive objections and difficulties, as in the Abhidharma-samuccaya, and also as explained in the notes on fascicle 3 of the 'Maulī Bhūmi.' According to this single text, sound is like the light of a lamp, created by great elements apart from its substance.
