14.58

論云「若謂火等」等者，謂薩婆多救滅亦有因，如因火故，薪等方滅，此即火滅因。作此救者，亦不應道理。言「由彼與彼」等者，言此火與薪既俱生滅，不可與滅為因。如火與薪俱生，即火非生因，既與薪俱滅，何得與滅為因？若言火與滅為因者，火既薪俱生，生即應滅。

The treatise says: "If it is said that fire and the like..." and so forth: this refers to the Sarvāstivādin rescuing [the claim that] cessation also has a cause, as in firewood and the like ceasing only because of fire, which means fire is the cause of cessation. Putting forward this rescue also does not accord with reason. As for "Because that and that..." and so forth, it means that since this fire and the firewood arise and cease together, it cannot serve as the cause for cessation. Just as fire arises together with firewood and thus fire is not the cause of arising, since it ceases together with firewood, how could it serve as the cause of cessation? If one says fire serves as the cause of cessation, then since fire arises together with firewood, upon arising it should immediately cease.
