In the treatise's explanation of the three afflictive torments, it states, 'the first two afflictive torments are tied exclusively to the desire realm, while the last extends to the three realms.' The first refers to unwholesome karma; the second refers to sorrow and suffering, which belong exclusively to the lower realm—if judged by fruition, there is only physical suffering (duḥkha) and no mental sorrow (daurmanasya); the various afflictions are the third, and therefore extend to all three realms. Under karma, renunciation and joy/pleasure: this refers to leaving the household life, and the dharmas of leaving the household life are the preparatory practices (prayoga) for the path of vision.
