The treatise says, "Investigation and scrutiny are portions of the preparatory application of the mind that produces speech." Does this mean that what can produce speech is the caitta of volition, and these are a portion of volition, which is why they are called portions of the preparatory application of the mind that produces speech? As in the Abhidharma-samuccaya, they are called the states of inquiring and non-inquiring. Here, as in the Abhidharma-samuccaya, they should be portions of greed, etc., which should present a contradiction. Investigate this in the Western region, where there are further differing assertions holding them to be substantially real; here the Dharma Master does not state it, but investigate it as found in the Abhidharma-samuccaya and old notes, as in the separate notes.
