In the treatise's explanation of the seven sufferings subsuming the three sufferings, the first passage is the same as in other places. The second alternative explanation states that the first seven are subsumed under the suffering of suffering, because the World-Honoured One knows them in common [with others]. The craving and the like aroused toward pure and wonderful objects, which are countered by that, are the suffering of deterioration, hence it is cited. Although this is a mind that enters into deterioration, precisely by having craving toward the object, the craving of this and that being one, deterioration is then called suffering. Furthermore, it says that on account of the hindrance of craving, one experiences the various griefs and sufferings in the mind produced by that; therefore grief and suffering are precisely the suffering of deterioration. As previously in the Śrāvakabhūmi, there are also two explanations, which do not contradict each other.
