The treatise explains eleven births: what is the difference between the seventh and the ninth? It explains: The previous seven are stated in terms of the intrinsic nature of birth; the latter nine are stated in terms of place. Another explanation: Regarding the seventh, because it is free from defilement, it is called pure; because it is [among] ordinary beings, it is called impure, for initial birth forms a clause in contrast with bodhisattvas and the like. Regarding the ninth, because its substance is free from defilement, it is called pure; because one cannot see the truths in this place, it is called impure, for birth in a place forms a clause in contrast with states with opportunity. In 'the five such as not being insane', 'dismembering the limbs' refers to the Western practice when intending to burn a dead corpse: one hires someone to dismember the limbs before burning it, because it burns more easily. The 'pukkasa' mentioned below is precisely this person.
