In the treatise's explanation of the meaning of defiled (sāsrava), there are four faults: First, lack of serenity: below it says 'produced by the active manifestation of the entanglements', which refers to the actual substance of the active defilements as stated in the treatise. The Dharma Master says: Because defilements manifest actively, they agitate and trouble the faculties and so forth, hence it is termed 'lack of serenity'. Second, internal and external mutation: the text below speaks of 'produced by the matters of the defilements following upon the defilements', which refers to the matters produced by the defilements; because such greed, hatred, and so forth arise, they cause internal and external mutation, making faculties and sensory objects alter; faculties and sensory objects are called 'matters'. Third, initiating bad conduct: below it says 'produced with defilements as cause and condition'; because defilements serve as cause and condition, they initiate bad conduct, and bad conduct is produced by defilements. Fourth, being a cause of grasping: the text below says 'projecting future existence', which can be understood from the text.
