The treatise says: "The first phrase speaks of the common characteristic (sāmānya-lakṣaṇa)": this refers to the phrase 'this body is possessed of form.' "The second is the particular characteristic (svalakṣaṇa)": this refers to being composed of coarse residue, differentiating it from the form of the form realm; therefore it is called the particular characteristic. "Supporting cause, generative cause, and augmenting cause": this refers to being formed of the four great elements as the first, up to being nurtured as the third. 'Caused by cold' is covering; 'caused by heat' is bathing; 'fatigue' refers to massage. "The first two are the living states": this refers to cutting and destruction, because these exist during life. Because of the time of death, there are two states, namely the dharmas of dispersal and cessation, which are dispersal and cessation through another cause and natural dispersal and cessation. Alternatively, dispersal constitutes one and cessation constitutes one. "By eight grounds, a man is bound by a woman": first, dancing; second, singing; third, laughter; fourth, glancing—these occur during play and diversion. Beautiful face is the first, exquisite touch the second, reverent service the third, and proper decorum the fourth—these occur during enjoyment. "Balanced feeling (upekṣā-vedanā) is subsumed under feeling": the Dharma Master says: the particular characteristic refers to the particular characteristics of joy and pleasure. The common characteristic refers to the capacity to experience. The characteristic of reliance refers to this feeling being able to gather and benefit the characteristic of reliance; the reliance is the body. The present explanation: the particular characteristic is solely the feeling of joy, because it resides in the mind. The common characteristic is the feeling of pleasure, because it extends to the six consciousnesses. The characteristic of reliance is that it can gather and benefit the body relied upon. The particular characteristic and common characteristic reveal the substance of balanced feeling; the reliance reveals its subsumption under feeling.
