16.38

有八棄捨近住弟子因緣：憎惡弟子故，欲自身受恭敬，一；利養，二；毀犯戒，順棄捨之，三；有饒益師者須，損減師者不須，四；戒，五；定，六；慧，七；於弟子大眾事務僧事不能堪忍，雖善大眾，為是弟子故不忍，八。　又解：憎惡弟子棄一，利養、恭敬合為第二，餘六同前。

There are eight causes and conditions for abandoning a co-resident disciple: (1) hating the disciple and wishing to receive reverence oneself; (2) material gain; (3) transgressing precepts and appropriately abandoning them; (4) needing one who benefits the teacher and not needing one who causes detriment to the teacher; (5) morality; (6) concentration; (7) wisdom; (8) being unable to tolerate the business of the great assembly and monastic affairs regarding the disciple—though one treats the great assembly well, one cannot tolerate it on account of this disciple. Another explanation: hating the disciple and abandoning them is one; material gain and reverence are combined as the second; the remaining six are the same as before.
