Regarding "There is joy with clinging attachment, there is joy free from clinging attachment, and there is joy supremely free from clinging attachment, which are subsumed under two realms," there are five explanations: First: Joy with clinging attachment is defiled joy of the desire realm; joy free from clinging attachment is undefiled joy of the desire realm; joy supremely free from clinging attachment is joy of the form realm. The first two belong to the desire realm and the latter one to the form realm; hence they are subsumed under two realms. Second: In the *Bahu-dhātuka-sūtra*, three realms are spoken of: the form realm, the formless realm, and the realm of cessation. Both the desire and form realms are collectively called the form realm. Here, joy with clinging attachment is joy of the desire realm, and joy free from clinging attachment is joy of the form realm; these two are collectively named the form realm among the three; joy supremely free from clinging attachment is subsumed under the uncontaminated realm of cessation. Hence it is said to be subsumed under two realms. Third: Joy with clinging attachment is joy of the desire realm; joy free from clinging attachment and joy supremely free from clinging attachment are joy of the form realm. Contaminated absorption has two kinds: first, absorption attached to flavor; second, pure absorption. Pure absorption has four kinds: first, leading to degeneration; second, leading to stabilization; third, leading to distinct progress; fourth, leading to decisive penetration. Joy free from clinging attachment is absorption attached to flavor and the portions leading to degeneration and stabilization; it is free from the defilements of the desire realm, because it enters and exits together with defiled minds. Joy supremely free from clinging attachment is the portions leading to distinct progress and decisive penetration. Together, they are subsumed under the two realms of desire and form. Fourth: The desire, form, and formless realms correspond respectively to the three. The first two are joy and attachment; the latter is contentment, which is given the name "joy," like the earlier meaning of pleasure. Among the three in the *Bahu-dhātuka-sūtra*, these are subsumed under two realms, excluding the realm of cessation. Fifth: The first is the joy of householders in the desire realm; the next is the joy of the form realm; the latter is the joy of renunciants in the desire realm. Therefore, all three are subsumed under the lower two realms.
